Premium Travertine Treads & Risers for Elegant Staircases

When building or renovating a staircase, using natural stone completely transforms the look of your home. Travertine Treads & Risers refer to the individual stone pieces used to build beautiful steps. Thetread is the flat, horizontal part you step on, and theriser is the vertical backing piece that sits between each step.

Unlike plain concrete or carpeted stairs, premium travertine steps bring a seamless, luxury feel to your property. Formed over thousands of years in natural hot springs, this 100% natural stone offers a high-end, custom finish that factory-made materials simply cannot replicate.

Our treads and risers are incredibly versatile and can be used to create stunning staircases bothindoors and outdoors.

Three options to build your perfect step

At Reliant Stones, we supply our premium travertine steps in two distinct tread shapes and one standard riser to match your architecture:

  1. Travertine Bullnose Tread
  • The Look: Soft, smooth, and traditional. This piece features a beautifully rounded front edge.
  • Why choose it: It is the classic choice for family homes. The smooth, curved edge is comfortable for bare feet and adds a relaxed, timeless look to garden steps and outdoor patios.
  1. Travertine Pencil Edge Tread
  • The Look: Clean, crisp, and minimalist. This edge is square but features a tiny, softened corner so it is never sharp.
  • Why choose it: It is the ultimate favorite for modern architectural designs, grand entryways, and sleek indoor or outdoor staircases that focus on neat, straight lines.
  1. Travertine Riser
  • The Look: A flat, matching vertical stone panel that pairs perfectly with either tread style.
  • Why choose it: It completes the look of your staircase by closing the gap between each step, giving you a grand, solid stone staircase that flows beautifully from top to bottom.

Why choose Travertine for your stairs?

  • Excellent non-slip safety: Safety is everything on a staircase. For outdoor stairs, we use a textured, unfilled finish that leaves the natural pores open. This provides an excellent grip underfoot, keeping your family safe from slips, even when it rains.
  • It stays cool under the sun: For outdoor garden or patio stairs, travertine has a unique ability to reflect heat. Even on blistering summer days, your steps will stay comfortable for bare feet.
  • Built for heavy foot traffic: Stairs take a lot of daily impact. Travertine is incredibly tough, dense, and naturally resistant to cracking. It easily handles decades of heavy walking without wearing down.
  • Seamless indoor-to-outdoor flow: Because we offer matching finishes for both inside and outside the house, you can use smooth, filled travertine steps for your indoor hallway and transition smoothly to textured steps leading down to your garden.

Choose your color

Every single tread and riser shows off the raw, breathtaking beauty of natural stone. We offer our stair pieces in our four favorite signature colors:

  • Ivory: A bright, creamy white. It reflects natural light beautifully, making dark stairwells or outdoor paths feel incredibly grand, open, and welcoming.
  • Beige: A warm, sandy color that brings classic Mediterranean warmth to your home. It is highly practical because it easily hides daily footprints and dust.
  • Silver-Grey: A modern mix of cool greys and silver veins. It creates an incredible, sharp contrast next to green lawns, wooden decks, or sleek modern interior walls.
  • Noche: A deep chocolate brown and rich walnut tone. Perfect for creating a bold architectural statement or a cozy, traditional staircase with lots of character.

How to clean and look after it

Caring for travertine steps is simple if you follow these basic rules:

  1. Seal the stone every 1 to 2 years

Because stairs are high-traffic areas, applying a protective liquid sealer keeps stains, outdoor dirt, and weather damage from soaking into the stone.

  • The water test: Splash a little water on a dry step. If it sits on top in a bead, your sealer is working. If it soaks in and darkens the stone, it is time to put on a new layer of sealer.
  1. Basic daily cleaning
  • Sweep up sand: Sweep your stairs regularly. Walking on gritty sand or dirt can act like sandpaper and scratch the stone over time.
  • Use gentle soap: Wash your steps using only mild, pH-neutral cleaners made specifically for natural stone.
  • Clean spills fast: Things like red wine, coffee, or mud should be cleaned up quickly to prevent them from soaking into the stone's pores.
  1. What to strictly avoid
What to avoid Why you must avoid it
Vinegar, Lemon, & Bleach These are highly acidic. They will chemically burn the stone and leave permanent, ugly white dull spots on your steps.
Wire Brushes & Scratchy Pads These will scratch the beautiful surface and ruin the finish of the stone.
Generic Glossy Sealers Standard wet-look or acrylic sealers trap moisture inside the stone, which can cause the steps to turn cloudy white and decay.
High-Pressure Washers Extreme water pressure can blast open the natural holes in outdoor steps or weaken the mortar joints holding them together.
